If you’re an SRM Institute of Science and technology (SRMIST) student, you already know how critical your CGPA is — it’s the number that appears on your degree certificate, shapes your placement eligibility, and determines whether you qualify for higher studies abroad.
This guide walks you through exactly how SRM’s grading system works, how to calculate your SGPA and CGPA from scratch, what the grading scale means for your academic standing, and everything competitors haven’t told you — including how backlogs affect your CGPA, which regulations apply to you, and what CGPA thresholds actually matter for placements.
What Is CGPA at SRM University?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of your Grade Point Averages across all completed semesters. Unlike your semester GPA (SGPA), which only reflects one semester’s performance, CGPA is your running academic scorecard from Day 1 to graduation day.
At SRMIST, CGPA is calculated using a 10-point scale where each grade carries a fixed grade point value. Every subject you study has an assigned number of credits, and your performance is measured by multiplying the grade points you earn by those credits.
SRM University Grading Scale (Official)
SRMIST uses a 10-point grading scale for both the 2019 Regulation and the 2021 Regulation:
| Grade | Grade Points | Performance Level | Marks Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | Outstanding | 91–100 |
| A+ | 9 | Excellent | 81–90 |
| A | 8 | Very Good | 71–80 |
| B+ | 7 | Good | 61–70 |
| B | 6 | Above Average | 50–60 |
| C | 5 | Average | 45–49 |
| F / RA | 0 | Fail (Arrear) | Below 45 |
How to Calculate SGPA at SRM (Step-by-Step)
SGPA is your grade point average for a single semester. SRM uses a credit-weighted formula:
Example: Suppose you have 6 subjects totalling 20 credits with a weighted grade point sum of 163:

Once you have the SGPA for each completed semester, CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all semesters:
2019 vs. 2021 Regulation — Key Differences
Your regulation year determines your credit structure, which directly affects how your CGPA is computed.
| Feature | 2019 Regulation | 2021 Regulation |
|---|---|---|
| Applies to batch | Admitted before 2021 | Admitted 2021 onwards |
| Total credits (8 sem) | ~170–180 credits | ~160–170 credits |
| Internship credit | Limited | Expanded (AICTE aligned) |
| Grade scale | O–F (10-point) | O–F (10-point) |
SRM CGPA to Percentage Conversion

CGPA Thresholds That Matter for SRM Placements
| CGPA Range | Typical Eligibility |
|---|---|
| < 6.0 | Most companies screen you out at resume stage |
| 6.0 – 6.9 | Mid-tier and service-based companies |
| 7.0 – 7.4 | Most IT majors (TCS, Infosys, Wipro) |
| 7.5 – 8.4 | Product companies and dream companies |
| 8.5+ | Top-tier shortlists (FAANG partners, core engineering) |
How Backlogs (Arrears) Affect Your CGPA
When you score an F grade in any subject, the 0 grade points are immediately included in your CGPA calculation. When you clear the backlog, the new grade replaces the F. However, the best grade you can typically earn on a supplementary attempt is an A (8 points) — not an O.
With one F (4-credit subject): SGPA drops to 6.4 — a 1.6-point fall from a single backlog
Practical Tips to Improve Your CGPA at SRM
- Front-load your effort in Semesters 1–4. Early semesters carry high credits. A strong start compounds across all 8 semesters.
- Prioritize high-credit subjects. A 4-credit subject affects your SGPA twice as much as a 2-credit one.
- Attend continuous assessments seriously. CAT 1, CAT 2, and model exams carry 40% of the total marks. Skipping them puts you at a 40% handicap before the end-semester exam.
- Know your standing before the end-semester exam. If you’ve scored 35/40 in internals, you only need 45/60 in the exam for an A+.
- Consider grade improvement re-registration if available in your Department for subjects where you scored a B or B+.
- Don’t let placement prep tank your CGPA. A CGPA below 7.0 in Semester 5/6 can shut doors at companies with rolling cutoffs.
